finasteride
Finasteride: Men`s health
Finasteride is a powerful medical compound used in the treatment of male pattten baldness or aloepecia and BPH. The pattern male baldness is found in men, especially in adult men. BPH is a condition of enlarged prostate and is found only in senior men. Finasteride is used to reduce the effects of BPH and curb male hair loss caused due to Aloepecia. Finasteride is a medication available by prescription only and helps to regain those lost, dazzling hair.
Finasteride is a potent and acute medication used for the treatment of the condition of BPH – Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. The condition involves increase in the size of prostate gland. This increase in size is caused due to multiplication of cells in the prostate gland. Prostate gland is located above the urethra. The rapid multiplication in the prostate gland occurs due to high concentration of DHT- Di Hydro Testosterone. DHT is responsible for enlarging the prostate by causing rapid multiplication of cells. DHT penetrates into the epithelial cells and stromal cells of the prostate gland and causes rapid multiplication of cells. DHT is believed to be Androgenic in nature. The condition of unnatural cell division is known as ‘Hyperplasia’. This kind of growth is not considered tumoros or cancerous in nature. Hence it is also termed as ‘Benign’. Thus, we say that BPH is not a serious condition.
However, BPH is responsible for blocking the urethra. As the urethra is blocked, one finds it difficult in passing the urine out of the body. Hence, this may cause incomplete draining of the urinary bladder. As the urinary bladder is emptied partially, frequent urge of urination occurs. At times, if the enlargement of the prostate gland is more severe, then it may result into complete blockage of the urethra. Such a condition would lead to complete blockage of urine and would cause serious consequences.
Finasteride is powerful prescription medicine used to treat BPH in men. The primary function of Finasteride involves suppression of the production of Di Hydro Testosterone (DHT). The production of Di Hydro Testosterone occurs by the conversion of Testosterone in the body. As the levels of DHT are suppressed by Finasteride; the unnatural growth of the epithelial and stromal cells of prostate gland stops. Thus the growth rate is hindered by Finasteride and this causes the cells in the prostate gland not to multiply. As the cells do not multiply, the size of the prostate gland reduces. The action mechanism of Finasteride takes almost 4 to 6 months. Thus, Finasteride is not known to give instant effects.
The production of DHT is also responsible for the hair loss in men. Stuidies reveal that DHT dries up the scalp and loosens the roots of the hair. As the hair roots are loosened, the hair easily falls off. The scalp beneath the hair is also damaged due to this increased production of DHT within the blood. As the skin gets dried up, it loses the necessary moisture and thus causes hairfall. Finasteride reduces the production of DHT in men. As DHT is reduced, the hairfall is reduced. Further, the hair roots or hair follicles are shrunken due to DHT. Lower amounts of DHT in the blood cause the hair follicles to expand. With expansion of the hair follicles, Finasteride promotes the growth of new hairs and thus the problem of baldness in men gets treated.
The production of DHT is caused due the enzyme 5 a – reductase. The enzyme compels the production of DHT. Finasteride is known to suppress this enzyme and is hence called as 5 a-reductase inhibitor. The inhibitory action causes the lesser production of DHT. With less DHT, the hair follicles, which contain dermal papilla cells, get the necessary nutrition from the blood. Thus, new hair growth becomes possible by Finasteride.
Finasteride should be taken on prescription basis only. The suitability to the medicine - Finasteride should be assessed by a qualified medical practitioner only. Finasteride should not be taken with any other kind of PDE-5 inhibitor. It should never be taken with any form of ED medication. If taken, Finasteride may cause severe side effects relating to lowering of blood pressure. Further, this medication may be taken with or without food. However, if the tablet is broken, it may cause a strong pungent taste to occur. Finasteride should never be handled by women or teenagers. Further, woman should never handle Finasteride if pregnant. This may affect the male foetus and cause complications.
Finasteride is also known to cause side effects. The common side effects seen are loss of sexual libido in men. This is due to hindered production of Testosterone. Little more severe side effects of Finasteride include loss of sexual interest, Erectile Dysfunction (ED), premature ejaculation and uncertain erection timings. Finasteride may cause unnatural hair growth at times. Prominent side effects of Finasteride may involve pain in testicles, lumps in breasts, discharge from the nipples, partial growth in breast, tenderness of breast and breast pain. Inability to urinate and urinary problems may occur. Serious allergic reactions caused by Finasteride may include skin rash, itching, swelling of tongue, throat and face, dizziness and breathing problems. Certain problems may not be mentioned. On Perception of any side effects mentioned or not, kindly consult the medical advisor. One should discontinue the medication if severe side effects are perceived.
Finasteride is proposed medication for treatment of BPH and hair loss. Approved by FDA, Finasteride has helped many men to gain relief, who were once suffering from prostate problems. Thus, Finasteride is a widely acclaimed medication.
